Followed by millions of people, these young musicians adapt great hits into versions from the Middle Ages

“How would Bad Romance by Lady Gaga have sounded in 1350 ? What if Ed Sheeran’s Shape of You had been written by a French minstrel from XV^e century ? This is the concept of music by Courseval », explains the first acoustic music group dite « bardcore ».

“Bard version music”

“Bardcore”, in other words “bard version music”, is a new genre of music born in 2020which consists of cover pop/rock hits modernwith medieval sounds and instruments .

Until now, this music was made using computers. But the three Norman musicians from Courseval play it on period medieval instruments. They perform contemporary successeswhich they rework the words in comprehensive old French.

The Courseval group is, in fact, only medieval in its musical instruments and different costumesto give the illusion of a return to the Middle Ages.

Medieval costume is also part of the spectacle . They usually play with two lutes, a harp, a soprano recorder, a tenor recorder, a drum, cymbals and a tambourine.

Who are they?

Jocelyn Daprey lives in Valognes (Manche). He is the flautist and harpist of the group. He studied cello for four years in music schoolthen he self-taughton period instruments.

Justin Langlois sails between Cherbourg and Caen (Calvados), but he comes to rehearse in Valognes with Jocelyn. He owns a master’s degree in musicology he was a student at the Caen conservatory and he teaches jazz piano part-time for National Education.

Armand Delaville, the percussionist, plays on tambourines for which he built a support. Like his two other friends, he is a multi-instrumentalist and self-taught, having played in several metal bands .

Millions of views

These three musician friends, multi-instrumentalists and with varied musical backgrounds, are passionate about the Middle Ages. They started by broadcasting their first adaptations on TikTok, then public enthusiasmand the million views achievedconvinced them to offer live performances .

This is how the group took its first steps in the streets of Caen several times in the during the year 2024but their official debut dates from December 21 where they played at the Christmas marketof Caen in an event partly financed by the City.

Projects for 2025

Jocelyn Daprey explains the approach he wishes to propose:

Our project is suitable for a very large number of performances: strolls, street music, intimate concerts in bars or media libraries, large format concerts on amplified stage. We are open to any proposal. We match our costumes accordingly: traveling troubadours for a tavern or strolling style performance, high-ranking minstrels for balls, weddings, and other prestigious court celebrations.

A date has already been set: the entertainment of the banquet which will take place as part of the medieval events which will take place in Creully sur Seulles, near Bayeux, during the Ball of the Enchanted Kingdoms, on January 31 and 1^is February 2025.
