Glen Matlock is not very cheerful about the Oasis reunion and their upcoming shows.
It’s probably the most important rock news of the year, at least the one that made the most noise and was the most commented on: Oasis is back, for a reformation tour which panicked the media and fans. A tour which is already sold out everywhere, so much so that the group had to add dates to its tour, hoping that this time, things are a little better organized in terms of ticket sales platforms. And if everyone only talks about that, There is one to whom all this is neither hot nor cold: Glen Matlock, the former bassist of the Sex Pistols, who paid the two brothers in an interview.
“They’re boring.”
It was during an interview for NME that Glen Matlock let loose. A media release that Liam Gallagher would not have denied, he who is so fond of punchlines launched in the press:
I understand the craze if you’re a fan. They have a lot of fans. But For me, Oasis is a bit like Status Quo: hearing a song once is enough. I find them a bit repetitive.
A somewhat violent opening, tempered later when the bassist sends a few compliments to Liam Gallagher by listing his qualities, while lighting up the rest of the group:
Liam is fantastic. He sings really well – it’s like Johnny Rotten, but with a real voice. He has a magnetic personality on stage: he can just stand there, and it’s captivating.
The other guys? No. I think they’re boring live. I would never go see them.
At least this is clear: you won’t find Glen Matlock in the pit on the Oasis tour. The former bassist even went further, recounting one of the Oasis concerts he attended. A concert which did not leave him with lasting memories:
There was talk for a while of me helping them on bass, around 1995-96, but they eventually settled with another bass player.
I went to see them at the Earl’s Court. I left the concert. It was boring. Another time, in New York. Nothing to do, I was just waiting for one thing: to leave.
[…] The reason they didn’t take me was because they wanted someone who wouldn’t move. Alan McGee asked me, but looking at them, I said to myself: the last thing they need is another person standing still.
Here is Oasis dressed for winter with these declarations from the ex-Sex Pistols: people who are not very interesting live, who stay still with little energy. At least the band knows what they have to work on for their reunion tour!
