the essential
“Caribe”, by Ana Carla Maza Trio, will be one of the highlights of the cultural season, Saturday at 8:45 p.m., at the Casino.
Born in Cuba, during the period when Wim Wenders recorded “Buena Vista Social Club”, Ana Carla Maza, virtuoso singer and cellist, took her first steps on stage at ten years old and then continued to evolve internationally. After the success of her solo albums “La Flor” and “Bahia”, in 2022, which were followed by a tour of 150 concerts given in 14 countries, “Caribe” is the third album of the Cuban cellist and composer, this time – this accompanied by musicians. She renews a declaration of love already addressed to Latin American music in the previous opus.
It begins with Guanabacoa, the “tierra de Aguas” neighborhood in eastern Havana, home to Cuba’s first African Cabildo, and the place where she was raised and introduced to cello, piano and Latin rhythms. . “Caribe” is an energetic mix of jazz, classical music and Latin rhythms. We wander through samba, bachata, funk, cumbia, reggae with a sensual touch of lyrics in French and Spanish. “Caribe” is a carefully orchestrated production, driven by his artistic vision of joy, unhurried Cuban rhythms, strong charisma and virtuoso cello work perfected at the Conservatoire de Paris and La Habana.
“Living as a free woman”
Anna Carla has two mantras: “Live in the present and live as a free woman”. For the first, the musician chose the whirlwind of Latin jazz – dance music, loving melodies – available in thirteen brassy titles. For the second precept, with energy and feminism, she vetoed the usual frameworks, which require calling to the rescue an arranger and producer, men in most cases, to complete a project. “Cuban culture taught me that you have to go beyond barriers, overcome difficulties,” she confides.
For her trio concert, in Lavelanet, she will be accompanied by the Guadeloupean Arnaud Dolmen on drums and by a Frenchman on piano and keyboards: Norman Peplow.
Prices: 15 euros; reduced, 12 euros; young people up to 18 years old, 7 euros. It is strongly recommended to reserve your places on 05 61 01 81 41.
