Luc Monnet is as discreet as Frédéric Hinderzé is talkative. The two men have different personalities, but they share the essentials: a love of horses and patience. The victory of Great Goddess in the last Grand Steeple-Chase validated their resolution. The result would have been different but it would not have changed anything. “We gave up on the previous edition because the horse was not at its best level”, recalls Luc Monnet. Great Goddess, even at 90% of its means, could have claimed a good ranking in 2023. But that is not the philosophy of this team. “Anyway, continues the former president of the real estate companies of the Foncia group for Yvelines and Hauts-de-Seine, with Louisa (Carberry), you have no choice but to be patient. It’s the English school, we’re here for the long term. We want the horse to have a long career. Rarely will you see a foal debut before 4 years of age at Louisa. I don’t want to give a lesson to others, everyone has their own economic model and their own way of proceeding, but when you have won the Grand Steeple-Chase three times in five years you have a certain legitimacy.” Luc Monnet was one of the first to trust Philip and Louisa Carberry, around ten years ago: “I had a horse called Dourdour. They gave him a very honorable and long career. Dourdourwho hasn’t raced for three years, stayed with Phil and Louisa. When I go to Senonnes, I always spend time with him.”
“I didn’t know how to go about it”
With Frédéric Hinderzé the story is more recent and if Luc Monnet was not the instigator of his partner’s passion, he allowed him to take his first steps in the horse racing world. It was during a professional dinner to which the two men were invited that the first exchanges took place. “Frédéric knew that I had racehorses and he told me of his desire to get involved in the industry. I kept his proposal in the back of my mind and three weeks later, I asked him to partner us on horses that I had just spotted.” In this first batch there is a filly who will upset their destiny, a certain Hungry. On the track, the daughter of Walk in the Park will have a very honest career in the space of two years of competition. “Olivier Regley, who trained her, advised me to keep her as a broodmare because she had an interesting pedigree. Honestly I didn’t know how to go about it; landless breeder, I don’t know how to do it. I still submitted the idea to my partner, Frédéric Hinderzé, who reacted like me.” The two partners therefore plan to resell Hungry. However, both on one side and the other, we still want to extend this story. “One evening, I received an email from Frédéric who told me that if I was still willing, he agreed to follow me. We got started.” The broodmare is placed with Didier Blot at Haras de la Chaîne. Now you have to make it protrude. “I loved Plantera horse whose career I had followed and who had just become a stallion, continues Luc Monnet. So I contacted his entourage and negotiated two projections. The first for Hungry, the second for a broodmare of Didier Blot.” Is it beginner’s luck or the result of a brilliant inspiration, the fact remains that this union will result in the birth of two champions. “Hungry gave birth to Great Goddess and Didier Blot’s mare gave birth Trueshan ! It’s extraordinary, two future Group I winners took their first steps in the same paddock! Honestly, the story is beautiful.” And it is certainly not finished.
