Mariah Carey’s mother Patricia and older sister Alison both died on the same day last weekend, plunging the star into a terrible mourning. The singer of the legendary “All I Want for Christmas” confided in the magazine People on these two tragic deaths, which occurred on the same day. “I am heartbroken to have lost my mother last weekend. Unfortunately in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day,” said the multi-award-winning singer.
Thanking her fans for their many messages following the announcement of this terrible news, Mariah Carey said in a statement that she was “grateful for your love and support” and called for respect for her private life “in this difficult time”.
The causes of their death are still mysterious.
Explaining that she was “blessed” to have been able to spend the last weeks with her mother before her death, Mariah Carey did not specify the cause of her death, just like that of her sister. However, according to statements from a close friend of the singer to the English tabloid The Sun, Alison Carey was ill and “received palliative care at home for the last three weeks of her life.”
Alison Carey had particularly attracted attention in 2016 after her arrest for prostitution. The police had identified the diva’s older sister and had made public her HIV-positive status. At the time, Alison Carey had launched an appeal for help to her little sister in a video: “Mariah, I love you. I desperately need your help. Please, don’t abandon me like this”. The two sisters had not had a good relationship for many years, in particular because of Alison’s drug addiction, but the singer’s sister hoped that she could help her pay for her care.
Mariah Carey also had a tumultuous relationship with her mother. Although their relationship was complicated, Mariah Carey had confided in her memoir that her mother, an opera singer, was a major source of inspiration and that she had “always encouraged” her. The two women had also recorded a duet for the singer’s second Christmas album, in 2010. Mariah Carey’s father died of cancer in 2002.
