“A Perfect Couple”: “Murder Mystery” in the Nantucket Bourgeoisie

In a handful of years, mainly since the success of Big Little LiesNicole Kidman’s face has imposed itself on the small screen, to the point of becoming one of those assets on which producers can count to give an extra touch of glamour to any project. In A perfect couplethe actress takes on for once a role that suits her age, that of a mother of three grown boys, also the author of successful detective novels. Married to an idle and libidinous pot smoker (Liev Schreiber), she is preparing to celebrate, in their luxurious villa in Nantucket, the union of the youngest with a young woman of modest origin (Eve Hewson, seen in Bad Sisters). On the very morning of the wedding, a body pulled from the water puts a stop to the festivities and causes a great revelation of embarrassing, potentially accusatory secrets, which complete the shattering of the already fragile unity of this ultra-rich but neurotic family.

Adapted from a best-selling novel by American Elin Hilderbrand, this murder mystery without much mystery is worth it especially for its character study and the actors who serve it. Despite a marked plot and the unremarkable direction of Susanne Bier, the series thus reserves good moments, essentially linked to a few characters better written than the others – among them, a female cop who comes from the continent but who could come out of Broadchurchan enigmatic stepdaughter played by the excellent Dakota Fanning, and Isabelle Adjani as a luxury freeloader, perfectly useless but very entertaining. If A perfect couple does not have the satirical power of White Lotus, by Mike White, and despite the little attention paid to its outcome, it can be watched without boredom. Me. F.

Series created by Jenna Lamia. With Nicole Kidman, Liev Schreiber, Dakota Fanning, Eve Hewson (United States, 2024, 6 x 40-50 min). On demand on Netflix from September 5.
