Prix d'Amérique Legend Race: What the past reveals

This Sunday, January 26, the - Hippodrome will be the scene of the Prix d’Amérique Legend Race. Among the competitors at the start, who are the specialists in the premier event of French Trotting? Which horses have the profile to play a leading role in this edition? To answer these questions, our data team explored the past of the Great Race. Here's what it reveals.

THE PROFILE OF THE TROTTERERS WHO PERFORMED IN THE PRIX D’AMERIQUE

Sex and age: 6-year-old males often to their advantage
Rather dominant currently in the Prix de Cornulier (see the recent edition of the premier event in mounted trotting), the females do not have exactly the same success in the Prix d'Amérique. Since the beginning of the century, only one of them has managed to win the Prix d'Amérique: Belina Josselyn in 2019.
The males therefore dictate their law in the Grande Course, in particular the 6-year-olds, who have won almost half of the last 25 editions of the Prix d'Amérique (44%, 11 out of 25). A success which argues this Sunday in favor of the candidacies of Josh Power, Dimitri Ferm and Justin Bold, three males born in 2019.
Finally, we will highlight the effectiveness of the 5-year-olds (males and females combined) in the Prix d'Amérique. In total, seven 5-year-olds have taken part in the last 5 editions of the Legend Race. Five of them (71%) made it into the Top 5 of the Great Race. Only 5 years from the start of the 2025 Prix d'Amérique, Keep Going will try to improve this rather flattering statistic.

Gains: millionaires, but also…
The richest horses often have the upper hand in this event. Thus, the last 11 winners of the Prix d'Amérique posted more than 950,000 euros in winnings at the start of the race. 8 trotters meet this “financial” condition in the 2025 edition of the Legend Race: Hussard Du Landret, Emerald of Bais, San EngineDon Fanucci Zet, Ampia Mede SM, Go On Boy, Hooker Berry et Idao de Tillard.
It should also be noted that since 2010, 80% of the Prix d'Amérique podiums have been made up of one of the two richest horses in the race (12/15). A rewarding statistic for Hooker Berry et Idao de Tillard who, in gains, are ahead here Go On Boy.
However, lending only to the rich would be a mistake in Legend Race. Particularly for places. We thus note the presence of one of the two least wealthy horses in the race at the finish of 7 of the last 8 Quintés of the Prix d'Amérique. This year, they are Keep Going and Iroise De La Noe who tick this box.

Business card: the Critérium des 5 ans in the rearview mirror
An objective in itself, the Critérium des 5 ans is also a fantastic eye-opener. 6 of the last 10 winners of the Prix d'Amérique had previously finished 1st or 2nd in a Critérium des 5 ans. In the running this Sunday, Idao de TillardInmarosa, Josh Power but also Hussar of Landret (winner of this Critérium in 2022) meet this criterion.

America Races: the most significant performances
The performances achieved in the 6 qualifying races for the Prix d'Amérique must be taken into account to assess the chances of the competitors at the start of the Great Race. On an accounting level, we observe that 14 of the last 16 winners of the Prix d'Amérique (87.5%) had obtained one of the following results in the weeks preceding their success in the Legend Race:
– 1st or 2nd in the Prix du Bourbonnais Q2
– 1st in the Critérium Continental Q3 or the Prix Ténor de Baune Q4
– 1st or 2nd in the Prix de Bourgogne Q5.
At the start of this edition, Josh Power, Emeraude de Bais, Keep GoingJust Love You, Idao de Tillard et Go On Boy meet one of these criteria.

Prix d’Amérique: from one edition to another
The solution to a Prix d'Amérique is often found in the previous edition of this same race. Since 2005, 60% of Prix d'Amérique winners had finished in the top 3 or had been disqualified in this Group I a year earlier. In the race this Sunday, Idao de Tillard et Hussar of Landret exhibit this characteristic. Also in the game, Go On Boy (4th in the Legend Race last year) was not far from checking that box.
Sunday, Idao de Tillard will therefore defend his title in the Legend Race. Since 2000, 5 champions have managed to win twice in a row in the main event of the Paris winter meeting: Varenne, Offshore Dream, Ready Cash, Bold Eagle and Face Time Bourbon. Wink of destiny? Idao de Tillard has at least one thing in common with the last three cities. This winter he won the Prix de Bourgogne Q5. Ready Cash, Bold Eagle et Face Time Bourbon had done the same a few weeks before their 2nd coronation in the Prix d’Amérique…

: bonus for regularity
The Prix d'Amérique often rewards trotters who are fairly consistent in their performances: since 2012, 69% of Legend Race winners had finished in the top 4 during their 3 previous competitive outings (9/13). Go On Boy, It's A Dollarmaker, San Engine et Iroise de la Noé exhibit this characteristic.

Green emoji: a reliable indicator
7 of the 10 horses at the finish of the Quinté of the last two Prix d'Amérique were associated with a green emoji (1).
At the start of this edition, 7 competitors are credited with this color-brand of confidence: Iroise de la Noé, Josh Power, Emeraude de Bais, San Engine, Go On Boy, Hooker Berry et Idao de Tillard.
It should be noted that the protégés of Sébastien Ernault (Josh Power) often respond when associated with this emoji: 63% success in the first 3. The starters of Thierry Duvaldestin (Idao de Tillard) and Romain Derieux (Go On Boy) also finish more than 1 in 2 times on the podium when they are in “green”.

Foreign trotters: the San Engine threat
Since the turn of the century, six Prix d'Amérique have been won by foreign trotters. 5 of these 6 successes were signed by champions who had won during one of their last two outings on the track. At the start of this edition, San Engine is the only “visitor” who meets this condition.

AMERICA AWARDS 2025: THEY CHECK SEVERAL BOXES

In search of a second victory in the Prix d’Amérique, Idao de Tillard collects many favorable clues (specialist, winnings, America Races, business card among others) in this “historical” analysis and seems capable of honoring its favorite status in this edition.

Go On Boy ticks several boxes too…and was not far from ticking more (past clue from the race for example).
This Sunday, a great performance from Josh Power would also go in the direction of History (sex/age clues, business card, emoji, America Races).
Associated with the most “American” of Scandinavian drivers, San Engine has the typical profile of a foreign trotter capable of playing a leading role.

Hussar of Landret et Hooker Berry are also cited.

Iroise de la Noé et Keep Going present themselves here with arguments and could surprise.

FROM THE AMERICA PRIZE TO OTHER AMERICA RACES FINALS

The America Races don't stop at the Prix d'Amérique Legend Race. Two other Finals are on the program of this elite circuit: the Prix de Speed Race (which will take place on February 9) and the Prix de Paris Marathon Race (February 23).
Since 2009, 5 trotters have managed to win the Prix d'Amérique and the Prix de France during the same winter. Contested in a very different context (shorter distance, autostart), the Speed Race is considered the revenge of the Legend Race. In this race, it is the main players in the Prix d'Amérique who shine most often. A number of figures confirm this: Since 2009, 75% of the winners of the Prix de France were trotters who had previously finished in the top 3 of the Prix d'Amérique (12 out of 16).
The winners of the Prix d'Amérique do not systematically participate in the Prix de Paris. In recent years, those who dared to take up the challenge offered in the Marathon Race (a race over 4,150 meters) have often honored their status as champions. Since 2012, 7 winners of the Legend Race have competed in this Group I one month later. Results: 3 victories, 3 runners-up.
