“It’s a megahonor”: Quebec artistic director Patrice Vermette nominated for a 4th time at the Oscars for the film “Dune: Part II”

He may have been nominated three times in the past and won the prestigious statuette three years ago for his work in the first film. DuneQuebec artistic director Patrice Vermette never gets used to “the great wave of love” that he receives every time he gets an Oscar nomination. “It always feels a lot of good,” he confides in an interview.

Patrice Vermette was in a car in London with his producers when he learned Thursday morning that he had obtained his ticket to the high mass of cinema by collecting a new nomination for the Oscar for best artistic direction.

“I watched the nominations announcement on an iPhone while I was on FaceTime with my girlfriend at the same time,” he said with a laugh.

“Even though this is my fourth nomination, it still has the same effect. The rumors were good, but you never really know and it’s always a surprise when it happens. It’s always a mega honor and a great wave of love with all the emails and texts we receive in the minutes following the announcement of the nominations. It feels good.”

Patrice Vermette will therefore be on his fourth experience at the Oscars. The Quebec artistic director was appointed in 2010 for The Young Victoria (by Jean-Marc Vallée) and in 2017 for Arrival (by Denis Villeneuve), before winning his first Oscar three years ago for Dune: Part One. He stands out this time with his work on the film Dune: part two, directed by his long-time accomplice Denis Villeneuve.

He is “disappointed” for Villeneuve

Although he is delighted to see his work once again recognized by the Academy of Oscars, Patrice Vermette also admits to being a little disappointed that Denis Villeneuve was not selected in the best director category.

“I’m super happy that Denis and Tanya [Lapointe] received a nomination as producers for the Best Film Award, but I am still disappointed with [l’absence de Denis] in the category of directing and best adapted screenplay, he breathes.

“Because we wouldn’t be here without Denis. He’s the captain of the boat. We are happy [pour les nominations]but we are also disappointed for Denis.

Let us remember that Dune: Part Two received five Oscar nominations on Thursday, including one for Best Picture.

The 97e The Oscars ceremony will take place on March 2 in Los Angeles.
