“Onda”: a very sunny record by Brazilian singer João Selva

Brazilian artist João Selva is a singer, composer and multi-instrumentalist. He has just released his 4th studio album titled Then (meaning “the Wave”). A disc of 14 tracks that he recorded in and whose arrangements are signed by his lifelong accomplice: bassist Bruno Patchwork.

João Selva’s music is an explosive mixture that draws on Angolan semba as well as Caribbean zouk or Congolese rumba. Once these ingredients are mixed with samba, the whole results in a formidable dancing and dreaming machine.

This disc, ThenJoão Selva had the idea in January 2024 after traveling extensively along the Brazilian coast. There he met the masters of popular culture from his country and bathed in the popular euphoria that accompanies the Brazilian carnival. Produced upon his return, this new album is logically full of the energy, glitter and colors of this unique event of its kind.

João Selva is a native of Rio and moved to in France a few years ago. It is there that he works alongside his accomplice, bassist Bruno Patchwork, who made the arrangements for the 14 pieces of this album, like those of the three previous discs.
