In Pittsburgh’s emergency room, people can wait up to twelve hours before being treated; patients sometimes die in the waiting room, under the helpless gaze of dedicated and overwhelmed caregivers. Emergencies are nicknamed “the pitt”, or in French “the pit”. The new Max series follows there, in the same way as 24 Hoursfifteen hours of emergency duty, under the leadership of Dr. Robby, alias Michael Robinavitch.
Each episode constitutes an hour, from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., of this mundane and trying day at the same time, for the patients as well as for the medical team, in a hospital eaten away by the lack of human and material resources. “There are not enough healthcare workers in this country”tells the hospital director to Dr. Robby, while urging him to do things faster and better, in the first episode.
Caregivers at the end of their nerves
“Rubbish. If you paid them decently, people would line up to work here.”he replies. “Other hospitals are managing this crisis. So either you adapt or you move away.”she concluded, aggressively. But adapting with ever fewer resources? The caregivers, starting with the central hero, are all at the end of their nerves, when not in more or less latent depression, as the challenge is colossal.
And Dr. Robby is Noah Wyle, Dr. Carter from the series EMERGENCIES. At the time, he played the candid intern at Count County in Chicago. Today, he is the one who receives the students and trains them, with humanity and firmness. Noah Wyle is also at the origin of the project: during the Covid pandemic, in 2020, the mailbox of the actor, who was present in the 15 seasons ofEMERGENCIESwas filled with messages from exhausted caregivers.
Initially, he brainstormed with producer John Wells, also present on EMERGENCIESto relaunch the initial series. Before abandoning the project: “We wondered if launching the project with the title EMERGENCIES was the simplest and most advantageous option. That was what got people most excited, but that wasn’t really the point of the exercise. The more we went down this path, the more the objective was obscured by the reunion aspect, rebroadcast, or the reboot aspect… So I didn’t regret when we decided to pivot and find a way to tell the story. story in a new way. Do not revive EMERGENCIES freed us from the narrative limits to which we should have adhered and to which we should have paid homage”he said at the time of the series launch.
-The Pitt therefore focuses on the medical aspect. Contrary to EMERGENCIESbecause they don’t have time for it, the characters have little personal interaction, and certainly no time to flirt like in Grey’s Anatomy. They must manage medical and social emergencies and the victims’ loved ones at the same time. We are in almost documentary precision. Three episodes are already available on Max, the others will follow one another at the rate of one per week, on Friday.
The Pittavailable on Max.
