a beautiful exhibition near Lille

Until August 31, 2025, you will be able to see a beautiful exhibition right near at Departmental Science Forum : It is “Arts and Prehistory”. The opportunity to discover creations dating back up to 40,000 years: prehistoric sculptures and tools and even projections of the interiors of caves like those of Lascaux or Chauvet. We’ll explain all that to you. ????

A dive into the art of the first men with the “Arts and Prehistory” exhibition

After a short explanation on the history and context of the time, you will see lots of reproductions ofengraved toolsof the animal sculptures in deer antler or ivory. For the record, we call it furniture art because it can be transported.

The works that you will see the most are those which represent animals like horses, aurochs (prehistoric bulls) or woolly mammoths, but also quite a few representations of female figureswhich we call “Venus” with a body either round and generous, or filiform (depending on the period).

There are even some objects and materials like deer antlers or calcite which can be affected and taken in hand.

An interactive and immersive experience at the Departmental Science Forum near Lille

This exhibition also brings together nearly 90 reproductions of partsparietal art (which comes from “wall” for caves and “rock” for open-air works) like frescoes or engravings.

What’s crazy is that we found quite a few artistic creations dating from the same period, sometimes several thousand kilometers apart. For example, you will see reproductions of caves from the other side of the world like the Utah canyon paintings or those of cliffs of Huashan in China.

Part of the exhibition is also devoted to archaeological research that has been carried out in the region.

What makes this exhibition really cool is that it is completely immersive. With projections on reliefsphotos, films, screens and books where you can explore databases. We really learn a lot of things while being amazed.
