A sand-cast microphone placed on a steel tripod. On the ground, residues left by this piece imagined by visual artist Lucas Erin. The whole spirit of the project Kobra Legacy 1997-2017presented until February 1st in the Circuit space in Lausanne, is there: the values of hip-hop, the place of the MC, the notion of transmission, the idea of support, and what remains after erosion caused by time. Through archives and carte blanche, it is the journey of Kobra – a Lausanne-based distribution, production and management label – that this exhibition and the accompanying book-box set retrace, which is scheduled for release on January 31.
“The concept of Kobra Legacy mainly relies on transmission. I often hear young people who say that there has never been anything in terms of hip-hop in the Vaudois capital. Which is obviously not true, but they are not aware of the past. For example, in Marseille where I come from, the entire current scene refers to the IAM group because their influence is known to everyone. To fill this gap, I wanted to share our story,” explains Daniel Ewané, who has headed Kobra since its creation in 1997 with Laurent Chiappini and Vincent Kolb, now retired from the structure. An atypical saga told with lots of press clippings, photos, concert tickets, album covers, posters, audio and video recordings, with his charismatic boss as a recurring character.
