Geneva is seeking candidates for the position of cantonal mediator which has been vacant since the end of last year. The person responsible for the administrative mediation office (BMA) must be elected by the Grand Council. But the candidates are not jostling at the gate.
-The BMA had to cease its activities at the end of November 2024 following the non-reelection of the administrative mediator who had completed his mandate. Edouard Sabot, who was the only candidate in the running, had not obtained enough votes in the Grand Council to be elected. Several dozen ongoing mediation requests were suddenly interrupted.
One month to apply
The office of the Grand Council has launched a new election process. “In view of the limited number of applications” received last time, he is counting on a wide dissemination of this call for applications, he said in a press release on Monday. Interested people have until February 20 to apply.
The BMA is an independent entity whose aim is to resolve disputes between the administration and citizens. In 2023, it was requested 415 times, including 183 requests for mediation and 232 directions and requests for information.
The BMA has been the subject of several debates at the Grand Council in recent years. MPs criticized him for offering “social advice” while deviating from legal objectives. It was the subject of a report by the Court of Auditors in June 2023, which recommended clearly redefining its missions.
