But how far will BYD go? The Chinese car manufacturer has just achieved a new feat by launching a gigantic ship. Named “BYD Shenzhen”, in reference to the company’s hometown, this extraordinary transporter is capable of accommodating up to 9,200 electric vehicles on board.

BYD has just reached a major milestone in shipping. The Chinese has just launched the “ BYD Shenzhen », the largest carrier in the world. This giant of the seas, capable of accommodating up to 9,200 electric cars, reinforces the company’s ambitions. The ship docked in the port of Yangzhou, China after its construction. It is ready to enter service.

BYD Shenzhen: a ship like no other

With a length of 219 m, a width of 37.7 m and a draft of 9 m, the BYD Shenzhen impresses. Its maximum speed is 18.5 knots (34 km/h). The Chinese firm assures that it is “ world’s most environmentally friendly auto transporter » thanks to dual fuel technology: LNG and traditional marine fuel. It is also equipped with “ energy saving devices ».

That’s not all, it integrates stationary batteries “ BYD box ”, which can theoretically reduce fuel consumption when docking. The deployment of this behemoth is part of the Chinese manufacturer’s strategy. Indeed, the BYD Shenzhen is just the latest in a series of ships that BYD plans to build. The fleet will include 8 carriers by 2026. To date, 4 have already entered service.

These maritime giants will have the mission of facilitating the massive export of electrified vehicles around the world. In 2024, 417,204 units were delivered outside China, an increase of 71.9% from the previous year. With a strategy called “ vertical integration », the company not only manufactures cars, but also that of the equipment necessary for their transport.
