Death of Zeev Revach, Legendary Figure of Israeli Cinema

Zeev Revach, one of the greatest figures of Israeli cinema, died Saturday at his home in Ramat Gan at the age of 84. The actor leaves behind a rich career of more than 40 films, including the classics “Charlie Ve’hetzi” and “Hagiga Ba’Snooker”, and three Ophir awards, including one for his entire career in 2010.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu paid tribute to him: “Revach, born in Morocco, carved his path in life with his own hands. He was a man of the people with a radiant face, who loved his country and was attached to Jewish heritage. His artistic talent was expressed through varied roles. He played a long series of unforgettable characters who captivated a wide audience.

Born in Rabat in 1940, Revach arrived in Israel at the age of 8. The eldest of a family of eight children, he began his acting career after his military service in the Nahal brigade, joining the first promotion of the Beit Zvi theater school. His career really took off in the 70s with “Hasamba” then the cult films “Charlie Ve’hetzi” and “Hagiga Ba’Snooker”, where he played his most emblematic character, Hakham Hanuka.

In 2018, he participated in the political drama series “Shadow Government” before suffering a stroke in 2019, from which he never fully recovered. “I felt a little bad, I told Mali – ‘I want to go see a doctor, cancel the taxi’,” he said in an interview with Ynet five years ago.

The funeral of Zeev Revach will take place on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. at the Kiryat Shaul cemetery. He leaves behind a major cultural legacy, having contributed to shaping the genre of “boureka films”, these popular Israeli comedies often depicting, with humor and sometimes satire, the social and ethnic differences of Israeli society.
