Found guilty of “deceptive commercial practices” by the courts on Thursday, the famous brand received a sentence lower than the prosecution's requisitions.

Against the Baillardran canelés house, accused of “deceptive commercial practices”, the prosecution had requested a fine of 800,000 euros, half of which was suspended, publicity of the conviction and its display in all its stores .

Found guilty by the criminal court this Thursday, the world-renowned Bordeaux institution was however only fined 100,000 euros. “The prosecution reserves the right to appeal this decision”the Bordeaux public prosecutor quickly reacted in a press release sent to the press.

“No intention to harm”

“My clients have taken note of the court decision”soberly declares to Figaro Baillardran's lawyer, Me Sandrine Joinau-Dumail. In the sights of justice after an investigation by the Departmental Directorate for Population Protection (DDPP) – published in 2023 – which pointed out differences between the labeling of products and their composition after changes in recipes, Baillardran had argued his good faith at the helm in December.

«The King and Queen of England tasted Baillardran canelés without complaining, our canelés are artisanal and made by pastry chefs. It would be a shame if the canelé Baillardran, which is historic, saw its image tarnished,” the brand's lawyer then argued in our columns. A “absence of intention to harm and deceive the customer» which the court seems to have taken into account when rendering its sentence this Thursday.
