Mired for a month in an unprecedented public and internal crisis following the deprogramming of the Last Tango in Paris, by Bernardo Bertolucci, the management of the Cinémathèque française must explain itself this Thursday, January 16 before the parliamentary commission of inquiry into violence in the cinema. The hearing was scheduled, it was “accelerated”confirms the president of this commission, Sandrine Rousseau.
“We made a mistake: not reporting what Last Tango in Paristhis rape scene”, recognizes Costa-Gavras, 91, president of the Cinémathèque. It was on December 12, upon returning from Athens, where he presented his latest film, that the filmmaker was alerted by Frédéric Bonnaud, the general director of the institution. He tells him that, since the beginning of the week, cinema personalities and feminist associations have been up in arms against the screening of the film, scheduled for December 15 without the slightest debate organized before or after the screening: the film nevertheless shows a rape scene, filmed without the consent of Maria Schneider – the actress was not warned of its progress before filming. All require a round table or debate to accompany it.
