If Denis Villeneuve must return to Arrakis with the adaptation of Dune: Messiah, this new trip will be the last for the filmmaker.

An exciting new part

Denis Villeneuve realized one of his biggest dreams by adapting Dune for cinema. The filmmaker, who has always been passionate about the work of Frank Herbert, was able to pay tribute to the book in the best possible way by directing the two cinematographic parts which won over millions of spectators around the world. The adaptation of Dune was until then renowned for its complexity, but the Quebec filmmaker rose to the challenge brilliantly. But after the release of diptyque, Villeneuve is not yet finished with Arrakis and the destiny of Paul Atréides. The filmmaker still wishes to produce the adaptation of Dune: Messiah (The Messiah of Dune in French), the second book in the Dune cycle and a sort of epilogue to the original book. And as the filmmaker explained to The Wrapthis new film motivates him more than ever.

When I saw the second part finished, I realized it was over. I had succeeded. I had made an adaptation of Dune. And it’s an incredible privilege. I am very grateful to have had the chance to do this. I think my biggest surprise about this is that I don’t want to run away from Arrakis. I always want to go back. That’s what surprised me the most. I felt that after the second part I would need a break. I thought I might want to write a few films or do a couple of things before going back to Dune: Messiah. But the images that kept coming back to my mind, my appetite was absolutely intact. This is the biggest surprise. I still want to return to Arrakis.

One and last film

But if Denis Villeneuve is more than enthusiastic about the idea of embarking on this new project, he nevertheless assures that this film will be the last, at least for him. Asked about a potential additional adaptation, the filmmaker declared: “Afterwards, it would become unhealthy”. We therefore understand that Villeneuve does not want to devote the rest of his career to Dune, and we understand it. The director has already done exceptional work on the diptych, is expected to turn the corner with The Messiah of Dune and could feel even greater pressure at the idea of continuing this adaptation work, especially given the richness of this literary saga, now made up of around twenty books. To immerse themselves in the world of Frank Herbert, spectators will be able to count on Villeneuve one last time with the Messiah of Dune. But beyond this last film, we will have to focus on other adaptations, such as the Dune: Prophecy series.
