Le Figaro’s opinion

As soon as we pass the colossal entrance to the domain, everything here first appeals to our imagination. And for good reason, we enter the first so-called “experiential” hotel in the country, opened in 2017. Imagined according to the (fictitious) story of the (real) French naturalist Jean-Baptiste Lamarck, the entire five-star was designed as a university campus. In this context, the American Bill Bensley, famous interior designer of luxury hotels around the world, was able to use all his creativity. Result: once inside, we are considered science students, all members of the prestigious Lam U faculty, as luxurious as it is fanciful. The 231 rooms are distributed in buildings with architecture reminiscent of the colonial history of Vietnam, and all bearing the name of an academic department (Zoology, Anthropology, Conchology, etc.). The fact remains that, ideally located between the jungle and the sea, the resort is above all a haven of peace to be enjoyed as a couple or family during a major initiatory trip to Vietnam or Cambodia. A change of scenery and relaxation guaranteed.
The situation

Probably because it is the first establishment of a luxury hotel chain to see the light of day in Phu Quoc, the Emerald Bay Resort has chosen the best location, far from the tumult of Duong Dong, the main town. of the island. Located on 30 hectares of private land south of the west coast, it borders the most beautiful beach, Khem Beach (Khem meaning “ice” in Vietnamese, and here referring to the color of the sand, white as cream) on one side , and the dense tropical forest on the other.

The decor
9/10
We are first impressed by the vastness of the spaces. Everything here is big. The ceiling height is as impressive as the size of the giant windows. Architect Bill Bensley was given carte blanche, and he let loose, as much in the story he spun around Lamarck University as in the refinement of each room, the attention to every detail. The lobby, billed as the faculty dean’s library, is stunning. The colors, exotic (turquoise, anise or banana) on the exterior, cleverly match the more sober interiors. Walking around the resort is an activity in itself, which we highly recommend.
The rooms
10/10
The Emerald Resort offers 231 keys divided into 211 rooms, 15 suites and 5 villas, all exquisitely designed by Bill Bensley. Everywhere, the imposing bedding (incredibly comfortable), the large mirrors and the vast bathrooms adorned with a glass wall are grandiose. In the 95 “Ocean view” rooms, floor-to-ceiling windows offer a breathtaking view of the (private) bay and the surrounding jungle. The standing goes up a notch in the “Turquoise” suites, located on the top floor and with their own swimming pool on the roof terrace. For a stay with family or friends, but above all out of sight, the establishment offers a private villa with 7 bedrooms at the end of the beach, the Lamarck House – here, only a swimming pool, the length of the residence, forms a barrier with the ocean.

One week would not be enough to taste everything that the “Emerald” experience offers. Our student booklet, which is distributed to us upon our arrival, details a whole host of activities for adults (children have their own) ranging from early morning hatha yoga classes to Hoi’s lantern-making workshop Year, including a bicycle tour of the remains of the Cay Dua prison (coconut tree) and film screenings at the home theater. Even for those who would like to do nothing, there are three sublime swimming pools available – including the aptly named “shell pool”, in the shape of a shell, a paradise for Instagrammers -, and the Chanterelle spa, where everything is inspired by ‘Alice in Wonderlandfrom the staff uniform to the intriguing corridor that disappears… To go from one activity to another, you travel on foot, or by golf cart (with driver).

At the table and at the bar

Very special mention for the breakfast, gargantuan and of high quality, where French, Japanese, Vietnamese and Korean gastronomy come together to suit absolutely all tastes. For lunch and dinner, sudden cravings for seafood barbecues will be satisfied at Red Rum, a restaurant open like a magical kiosk in the evening, located between the swimming pool and the sea. A more classic appetite will be satisfied at Tempus Fugit, where Vietnamese and Western cuisines mix. Asian and American customers will particularly like the Pink Pearl, the gourmet French restaurant housed in a grandiose pink mansion on the water’s edge – pâté en croute, sturgeon meunière and pear-chocolate cream on the menu. Surprising at the other end of the world… But it doesn’t matter where you choose to dine: the evening must end with a cocktail at the aptly named “Chemistry Department”, where concoctions can be enjoyed peacefully in chaise lounges. two-seater, facing the sea.
Value for money
9/10
Because we are in Asia, even a heavenly resort can seem “accessible”. A price that will undoubtedly increase as luxury tourism develops on the island located just an hour’s flight from Ho Chi Minh International Airport. The entrance fee for a room is 290 euros, breakfast included.
