Former AC/DC singer Dave Evans discusses the origins of the legendary band’s name, amid rumors of a 2025 Australian tour.
The origins of the name AC/DC according to Dave Evans
In a recent interview with the podcast PodpokasDave Evans explained how the band came up with their famous name in late 1973.
“We were in rehearsals, and a potential manager, Alan Kissack, offered us a New Year’s Eve gig at Checkers nightclub, the biggest club in Australia. We needed a name quickly, so we decided that everyone would bring three ideas to the next rehearsal and we would choose at random. But, upon arriving, Malcolm Young suggested ‘AC/DC’, a name suggested by his sister-in-law. It referred to electricity — alternating current and direct current — and it was simple and easy to remember. Everyone liked the idea, and we decided to adopt the name.”
Evans also discussed his departure from the band in 1974, less than a year after their first concert. According to him, financial disagreements with management motivated his decision: “I couldn’t continue without being paid. I had bills to pay, so I decided to leave.”
