It’s the Christmas spy series. It starts the day before, to the sounds of party music, in a British pub. It doesn’t take long for, along the Thames, a murder of one of the customers to ruin the mood, while at the other end of town, the Defense Minister’s delicious wife intones a beautiful speech, during a reception organized by her husband, surrounded by their adorable toddlers.
Problem is, in the audience, she recognizes a woman with gray hair who tells her aside this murder, which concerns her: it was her lover. Black Dovesthe title of the series, means Black Dove. This is the name of a spy organization: a company that sells British government secrets to the highest bidders, concerning its relations with Saudi Arabia or China.
Hélène, the minister’s wife, we quickly learn, was recruited 10 years ago to deliver confidential information under her cover. The death of her lover will lead her to find the culprit. But the advantage of Black Dovesit is above all the duo that is both touching and funny that she forms with another black Dove, impeccably played by Ben Whishaw. Quite the opposite of the image we have of a cleaning spy, frail, gay, and ultimately romantic. He returns to the country on purpose after 7 years, to help his ex-colleague.
Black Doves looks like The Americansthis other realistic series which told the story of a couple of Russian spies, perfectly hidden in an American suburb. With also female fight scenes, which are reminiscent of Kill Bill. And she finally benefits from a key asset: Sarah Lancashire who we discovered in Happy Valley, and who is of nameless dignity, a true iron woman in a velvet glove, in the role of the boss of the spy agency. She never raises her voice but her words are sharp like the tip of a knife.
