The imposing Abbé Pierre on the red front of the Emmaüs store in will be erased at the beginning of January according to the Progress. This is the decision taken by the Emmaüs community which wishes to symbolically break with its founder, Abbé Pierre, following the serious accusations of sexual violence made against him.

Last October, the Emmaüs foundation had already announced its intention to erase any representation of Abbé Pierre. At the time, Dimitri, manager of the Gratte-Ciel store, explained to Progress that work to remove the symbols was to begin “in the coming days or weeks”. But the wait for municipal authorization necessary to install the scaffolding delayed this project.

Some want to go further

On the customer side, the values promoted by Emmaüs continue to mobilize. “I was furious to learn of these accusations, but I will continue to come and support the foundation, because it is for a good cause,” explains Anne-Marie, a loyal customer of the Villeurbanne boutique, at Progress. Véronique, another regular, regrets that these facts were not denounced sooner, but she shares the need to continue supporting the association. However, some, like Cacane, believe that we should go further by removing “the photo of Abbé Pierre from the Emmaüs website”.
