The Academy of Oscars has released the preselections for 10 of its categories, where “Emilia Perez” and “Wicked” dominate.

Animated or live-action short films, short or long documentaries, international films, makeup and hairstyles, soundtracks, original songs, sound and visual effects: here are the categories for which the Academy of Cinema and Sciences, responsible of the prestigious Oscar ceremony, has just revealed the preselection.

Lists ranging from 10 to 15 films, and from which the five nominees in each category will be drawn when the final nominations are announced. And some titles are omnipresent, starting with Emilia Perez by Jacques Audiard and Wicked de Jon M. Chu.

surprises and omissions

The two musicals unsurprisingly find themselves in the shortlist for best sound, but also in that for best soundtrack. Two songs fromEmilia Perez are also listed in the best original song category – where Wicked has no place, being adapted from a pre-existing musical. In total, there were six nominations for Audiard's film, and four for Chu. Enough to make the rest of the competitors tremble.

We also note with joy the presence in the shortlist of feature-length documentaries from Dahomey by Mati Diop and No Other Land by Basel Adra, Hamdan Ballal and Yuval Abraham, two major releases this year. Disappointment however regarding the absence of Raoul Peck's latest film, Ernest Cole, photographerwhich will be released in this Wednesday, December 25.

Dahomey is also mentioned among the best international films (he represents Senegal), alongside the Lithuanian animated film FlowGerman production Seeds of the wild fig tree by Mohammad Rasoulof, and Canadian comedy A universal language. Note that the 2024 Grand Prix, All We Imagine As Lightcould not qualify for preselection as India did not select him to represent it.
