In 1978, the group Chic released its second album, “C'est Chic”. Singer Norma Jean Wright gave way to Luci Martin and Alfa Anderson. And it is on this album that the global hit “Le Freak” appears.

Alfa Anderson dies at 78, announces Deadline. The co-founder of the group with Bernard Edwards, Nile Rodgers, paid tribute to him on Instagram. “Thank you for everything,” he wrote, mentioning the singer who will “always be loved.”

During the 70s, Alfa Anderson recorded backing vocals for many artists, including Odyssey and Roy Buchanan. She sings on the Quincy Jones-produced soundtrack to the film “The Wiz” (1978), starring Diana Ross and Michael Jackson. She was then invited to a singing session for Chic, then recently formed with Tony Thompson on drums and Norma Jean Wright on lead vocals. She initially started as a backing vocalist, then, after joining the band on tour, she was promoted to lead singer, a role she shared with Luci Martin from the late '70s to early '80s.

On the album “C'est Chic”, she performs two solo tracks, “At Last I Am Free” and “I Want Your Love”. The single with the song “Le Freak” was the Atlantic label's best-selling single for three decades, with more than 7 million records sold.

After the dissolution of Chic in 1983, she continued her singing career with Vandross, Gregory Hines and Mick Jagger. She released her first solo album in 2017, “ From My Heart.”
