WhatsApp adds music to Statuses

WhatsApp Statuses, these ephemeral publications launched in 2017, continue to evolve. Inspired by Instagram and Snapchat Stories, they have been enriched over the years: likesprivate mentions, confidentiality options… Today, WhatsApp is working on a new sweet treat: the possibility of adding to Statuses.

A musical touch for the Statuses

This function, currently in testing on beta version 2.24.22.11 for Android, was spotted by WABetaInfo. It would allow users to add a song to their photos or videos before publishing them. A small icon in the shape of a musical note should appear in the editor, allowing you to search for a title or artist. Result ? Statuses could become as expressive as those on Instagram, with a soundtrack that reflects their mood or emotions of the moment.

The idea is not new: Instagram already offers this option, and the success of Musical Stories on this platform has certainly inspired WhatsApp, both owned by Meta. Thanks to the parent company's partnership with Universal Music, the addition of music should not pose any rights problems.

For many, this feature is a real time saver. Today, some users get around the lack of music by editing their photos or videos on another application before posting them on WhatsApp. With this new feature, everything would be done directly in the app.

The goal is to give users an easy way to personalize their Statuses with a little extra soul. Well-chosen music can convey an atmosphere, a state of mind or simply share a musical favorite. A simple gesture that makes sharing much more lively.

For now, there are still unanswered questions. Will WhatsApp offer song lyrics, like Instagram? Will users be able to choose the length of the clip or select a specific part of the song? These details remain unclear, but it's likely that the app will introduce these features gradually, as it has done in the past with other tools.

In any case, this development fits very well with WhatsApp's strategy, which seeks to enrich its functions even if it means drawing inspiration from the best ideas of its competitors. Statuses, often seen as a secondary feature, could well gain popularity thanks to these additions.

For impatient users, the feature is still in development. If all goes as planned, it could soon be available to everyone.
