After the dancers, the angry employees of the Paris Opera. This Thursday, December 19, they began a strike movement at the call of the Sud Spectacle union. Objective: to defend “claims relating to the workforce”, insufficient “in all services” according to the union. A mobilization which comes a week after that of the Opera dancers concerning their remuneration.
The Paris Opera is subject to an employment ceiling, voted by Parliament, increased from more than 1,600 positions ten years ago to 1,484 today, according to Régis Cochennec, of the Sud Spectacle house union. But the Opera actually employs a number of people lower than this ceiling since it has 1,459 employees, of whom 15 full-time workers have yet to be lost, specifies the unionist.
The strikers are therefore demanding “the filling of all vacant positions since 2022”, according to the strike notice, consulted by AFP.
The Palais Garnier was closed to visitors on Thursday “due to a strike followed by some of the staff of the Paris Opera,” the institution announced on its website. The performance of the opera “Rigoletto”, scheduled for 7:30 p.m., and that of “Play”, at 8 p.m., were therefore canceled.
A general meeting took place this Friday morning, at 8 a.m., to decide on the continuation of the movement, without the decision being known yet this Friday noon.
Last week, opera dancers mobilized to demand an increase in remuneration for preparation time before shows and several performances were also canceled.
