In Quebec politics, 2024 was undeniably the year of great expectations disappointed. After the pandemic, however, we thought we finally saw this sacred light so promised at the end of the tunnel. However, it was quite the opposite.
Paper Tiger
Staggering stories of religious proselytism in French-speaking schools have shocked Quebecers. The secularism that they believed to be protected in public institutions by Law 21 turned out to be nothing more than a paper tiger.
Back to the future
Quebecers thought they had gotten rid of austerity thanks to the defeat of the Liberals in 2018. No! With a historic deficit of $11 billion, the CAQ government is raising it from the grave.
Special mention to Éric Duhaime
Even without any MPs, the leader of the Conservative Party of Quebec retained the support of his troops. Victim of a heart attack at the end of the year, we wish him a speedy recovery and perhaps even, if he is good, a CAQ defector for Christmas…
Where is the compass, where is it?
Far behind the Parti Québécois in the polls, François Legault promised, in 2023, to find his lost “compass”. At the end of 2024, it is still awaiting delivery.
Northvolt
Prime Minister François Legault swore that with Northvolt, Quebec would be at the forefront of the battery industry. Quebecers were disillusioned when they learned that more than $700 million of their money was being gambled away with no guarantee of results.

Throughout the year, our public health system continued to deteriorate while the supply of private care paid out of patients’ pockets skyrocketed.
To “shake the columns of the temple”, Minister Christian Dubé created the Santé Québec agency. So far more mirage than magic wand, its “top guns” must even slash services for $1.5 billion.

This portmanteau word which means everything and nothing has come back to us like a boomerang. Even the PQ leader, Paul St-Pierre Plamondon, vowed to fight Wokism before a poll showed that most Quebecers understood nothing about it. Oops.

The homelessness crisis has taken on dramatic proportions in all regions of Quebec. Minister Lionel Carmant now swears that he has reversed the trend. The reality is the opposite.
How to mess up everything
At Québec solidaire, Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois promised a “pragmatic” shift, but in the fall, by accusing all elected officials of racism, his deputy Haroun Bouazzi ruined his party’s congress, the arrival of the new leader. speech Ruba Ghazal and his own political career. Even his electorate was stunned.
After the PQ, the liberals?
After the surprise resurrection of the PQ, the Liberals spent the year praying for the same luck thanks to their leadership race in 2025. The exception to the rule of disappointed expectations.
The 3rd link to recycling
The CAQ tried to once again recycle its old broken promise of a third highway link to Quebec. Nobody listens anymore.
Disconnecting 101
Faced with the worst housing crisis in ages, the Minister of Housing, France-Élaine Duranceau, finally promised to put herself into “action mode”. It was nothing of the sort.
As long as there is life

On a happy note, health to the newborns vintage 2024 of deputies Gabriel-Nadeau Dubois and Marwah Rizqy and Gregory Kelley, political couple of the year!
