The first Japanese dating reality show to feature gay or bisexual men was one of the most viewed programs on the platform in Japan for 6 weeks and was in the Top 10 of over 45 countries, including Canada

Small streams make big rivers, one might say. Last July, Netflix launched Japan’s first dating series focused on young gay men. During the six weeks that followed, The Boyfriendthat’s the name of this cuddly reality show, has won over the public and remained in the top 10 of the most viewed programs on the platform, sometimes reaching 2e place.

No wonder, therefore, that Netflix renews the program for a season 2, with new candidates. Except that in the land of the rising sun, such visibility for queer loves is almost unprecedented in public space. Japanese law still does not recognize same-sex marriages nationwide.

But, maybe The Boyfriend made a few ricochets in the water… On Friday, December 13, the Fukuoka High Court, a departmental high court, ruled that the ban on same-sex marriage was unconstitutional. Three couples had in fact sued the State in this regard, and they won their case through this unprecedented recognition. And, last October, the Tokyo High Court came to the same conclusion. A battle won, although symbolic, it is also progress for the rights of LGBTQIA+ people in Japan.

Dai Ota, producer at Netflix in Japan, expressed his joy at the warm reception the first season received, noting that the stories and friendships of the participants had touched the hearts of viewers globally. Ota assured that the second season will highlight even more stories of compassion and personal evolution.

“The Boyfriend” brings together nine Japanese and East Asian men, who identify as gay or bisexual, living together in a luxurious setting called the “Green Room.” Unlike other reality shows, there is no elimination or competition. The main goal is to encourage friendship and, possibly, love. Each episode focuses on simple interaction, allowing camaraderie and love to flourish through the activities of a truck set up by the sea and from which coffee is served.

Viewers can follow the discussions and activities of the participants while benefiting from the comments provided by a round table moderated by the famous Japanese actress Megumi. This mix of authenticity and humor appealed to a large audience, thus contributing to the growing success of the show.

He also mentioned that season 2 will introduce new participants in a renewed filming setting, while continuing to deepen the emotional dynamics of the relationships highlighted. Season two of “The Boyfriend” is expected on Netflix in early 2025, and fans around the world are looking forward to discovering the new stories that will emerge in this unique series.
