the essential
With a new star dancer, the Ballet du Capitole is offering “Magie Balanchine”, starting Friday, for the entire holiday period.
The Ballet of the Opéra national du Capitole reunites the great master of neoclassical dance, George Balanchine, and three of his world successes: “Theme and variations”, “Tchaikovsky pas de deux” and “Who cares?”. This last piece will allow Jacopo Bellussi to tread the stage for the first time at the Théâtre du Capitole where he was named principal dancer upon his arrival. Until now, soloist then principal dancer with the Hamburg Ballet, he began dancing in Genoa, his hometown, before continuing his studies at the Academy of the Teatro alla Scala in Milan and then at the Royal Ballet school in London from where he graduated in 2011. The 31-year-old young man, with a slender body and shapely head, speaks five languages fluently. For almost ten years, he has been collecting titles and awards. In 2016 he won the Danza e Danza Prize for the best Italian dancer abroad and in 2019 the Konstanze Vernon Prize for the best emerging dancer in Germany. In 2022 he received the Positano Leonide Massine Prize for the Art of Dance as the best artist on the international scene.
Eight performances
Surrounded by his new Ballet comrades, he will give eight performances of “Magie Balanchine” in homage to one of the greatest choreographers of the 20th century. The influence of his school and the pieces he choreographed (425 ballets between 1920 and 1982) is still such today that we can say that George Balanchine is one of the most eminent choreographers of the 21st century. The Toulouse program will begin with “Theme and variations”, to music by Tchaikovsky, created by the American Ballet Theater in 1947 and entered into the repertoire of the Ballet du Capitole in 2004. It is a tribute to his spiritual father , Marius Petipa. The program will continue with “Tchaikovsky pas de deux” before “Who cares?”, a nod to the musical with music by Gershwin.
