« Wastewater is the mirror of the city; their reflection tells us a lot about the evolution of human activities, consumption habits and the state of health of the population », recalls Sabrina Guérin, Innovation Director of SIAAP, highlighting here all the interest of the city observatory.
Created in 2020 by SIAAP, its objective is to ensure long-term monitoring of the composition of water passing through the Ile-de-France sanitation network. Its study area covers a population of more than 6.5 million inhabitants of Ile-de-France. Today, 60 chemical molecules, 16 viruses and 7 bacteriological indicators are examined in wastewater. This list is updated regularly by a steering committee made up of experts from the academic world.
This observatory is valuable to inn scientific programmingeauvation, supported by the SIAAP, since it generates new data essential to understanding the water cycle. It is also intended to be a tool to support public actors in charge of decision-making on environmental issues, like the OBEPINE observatory, set up during the COVID crisis.
« Fully part of the dynamic of open science, SIAAP shares all the data from its observatory on European site Zenodoand has endowed its inn siteeauvation.fr of a tool for easy visualization of this data, valuable in many ways », Adds Vincent Rocher, Deputy Director for Innovation, Strategy and Environment at SIAAP.
