“We all threw away our vinyl records in the 80s when the CD disc appeared without knowing that we had grown up with an artistic education, because vinyl covers are often true works of art,” confides Serge Fendrikoffthe cinema programmer at Veules-les-Rosesnear Dieppe (Seine-Maritime), and organizer of the exhibition. The latter takes place from Saturday December 14 to January 12, at the Le Rex gallery.
Big names in photography
Record companies have often called on big names in French or foreign photography for their covers, often well inspired, because some have become cult. Others shocked the public and caused the covers to be immediately removed. These withdrawals made them rarities. Saturday’s exhibition will feature two of them.
“Making a selection was difficult,” underlines Serge Fendrikoff. A space in the exhibition is dedicated to Andy Warhol with 50 of his covers including one from 1949, a first pressing”. For him, art should belong to everyone. So he created vinyl covers.
Also on display will be covers of French artists such as Bernard Lavilliers with a visual of 1988created by Karl Lagerfeld. Other covers from great artists will be visible.
Guided tours
Guided tours will be organized, because they each have a story like the one where Bob Dylan appears with a young woman.
The opening of the exhibition takes place on Saturday, December 14, from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m., during the screening of three films in which the vinyl object has a role: A Fanfare, Once upon a time, Michel Legrand et The Valley of Fools.
