To his surprise, he is visible from the very first minute of the film. And for those who know him, it’s impossible to miss him: with his brown sweater, his slender waist, his bald head, his round glasses and his double bass, he is to the left of the conductor, the actor Benjamin Lavernhe.
The Dieppe Fabien Coquant is on displayA Fanfarea dramatic comedy which recorded nearly 365,000 admissions in the first week of its release in cinemas, on November 27, 2024. A feature film by Emmanuel Courcol which brings together, alongside Benjamin Lavernhe, Pierre Lottin and Sarah Buco.
I have very fond memories of the shoot.
Three actors that Fabien Coquant worked with for a week, the time of filming two scenes: the very first, where we see Benjamin Lavernhe, alias Thibaut, internationally renowned conductor directing his musicians, and the very last , shot at the Seine Musicale from Boulougne-Billancourt.
“I have very fond memories of it. Between two takes, Pierre Lottin, who is a musician himself, came to play the piano right behind me. And Benjamin Lavernhe did an incredible job in his role as conductor. He is very credible and we really followed him,” remembers Fabien Coquant.
With Thomas Dutronc and Alain Chamfort
“There’s nothing trivial about holding a conductor’s baton, so between two takes, he came to see us to ask if he wasn’t doing too much stupid stuff. There were real exchanges with the actors. It will remain an excellent professional and human memory,” continues the Dieppois.
However, Fabien Coquant has more than one memories with the world of cinema or television. It must be said that this professional musician, double bass player, has an atypical background. A few years ago, he joined the Scoring Orchestra of Paris, an orchestra specializing in the recording of film scores.
From classical Music to film concerts
“It is this orchestra which plays in A Fanfare “, he confides. He is also the one who accompanied the series on rap Validbroadcast on Canal+. And he tours for film concerts with the Yellow Socks Orchestra. “Large American and French productions,” explains Fabien Coquant. Harry Potter, Walt Disney, Azur and Asmar, The Choirs… are all shows that the double bassist accompanies live in all the Zéniths of France.
Sometimes with nice surprises, like last October when Gérard Jugnot came to attend the film concert of the Backing singers. Or when he played, just a few weeks ago, with Thomas Dutronc and Alain Chamfort on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Charles Aznavour.
First the piano
However, when he started music at the age of 5, Fabien Coquant was far from imagining this journey: “It was my parents who gave me a taste for music. I first played the piano, until the age of 14,” he remembers. Before discovering the double bass.
It was love at first sight, it was a match straight away.
So much so that he chose to make music, his profession. Conservatory and diploma in hand, he joined the orchestra of Douai, in the North, then that of the Capitole of Toulouse. He also plays regularly for the Rouen Opera. From concert to concert, from meeting to meeting, he created his network which led him to play for film scores and film concerts.
The municipal harmony at DSN Sunday for the screening of En Fanfare
On the occasion of the screening of the film En Fanfare with Benjamin Lavernhe, Pierre Lottin and Sarah Buco, the Dieppe wind orchestra is offering a somewhat special session, this Sunday, December 15, 2024 at 5:30 p.m. Thanks to the established partnership with Dieppe Scène Nationale, he will invite himself to the screening with some pleasant surprises for the spectators, before and after the film, who will thus be immersed in it.
Another way to play than in a symphony orchestra? Not really, “but it’s a real challenge. You have to be in sync with the image, says Fabien Coquant. When we watch a film, we often forget that there are musicians behind it. The concert film is very immersive with additional action, that of the musicians. They have no room for error.”
A nomadic life
Today, these film concerts take him to travel all over the world and to all the major cities of France. Yesterday in Caen, Bordeaux and Toulouse. Tomorrow, in Marseille, Lyon and Strasbourg with the “Disney in Concert” tour. “It’s a nomadic life, but a life that I love. Music is part of me,” he smiles.
And between two concert dates, he comes to settle down in Dieppe to enjoy his daughter. Before leaving. His next big project: the global creation of Umbrellas of Cherbourg which will be played at the Philharmonie de Paris on
December 21 and 22. The tour ofHarry Potter 4 from December 27 to January 12 and that of music by John Williams and Hans Zimmer from January 24 to February 23.
