“September without waiting”, the comedy of lovelessness

4 years ago, the young Spanish filmmaker Jonas Trueba enchanted us with Eve in August (The Virgin of August), portrait of a somewhat lost young woman who spends the summer alone in Madrid and… ends up finding herself pregnant without having had sex. In fact, this was already the fifth feature film by the author, also son of director Fernando Trueba (Belle Epoque, Chico & Rita, etc.). The latter finds himself invited as an actor in September without waiting (Volveréis), the 7th opus of Jonas Trueba since Venez voir (You have to come see it) has come in again in 2022! The method of this cinema bulimia? A lightness of production inspired by the New Wave, pouring Eric Rohmer, and a complicity with his favorite actors Itsaso Arana and Vito Sanz, who imagined with him this new “anti-romantic comedy”.

After fourteen years of living together, the filmmaker Ale and the actor Alex, thirty-something Madrilenians, have decided to separate. They come up with a slightly crazy idea, inspired by a statement from Ale’s father, that we should celebrate breakups rather than weddings. To prove that we can leave each other on good terms, they decide to organize a “breakup party” and invite their loved ones. Obviously, this announcement leaves them incredulous and perplexed. Even Ale’s father, although willing to lend his garden for the occasion, suddenly relativizes the significance of his remarks in the light of Kierkegaard. As for the couple themselves, are they really so sure of their decision?
