CINEMA – For its 39th edition, the Fête du cinéma is truly a sell-out. The National Federation of French Cinemas revealed the attendance figures for the first day on Monday, July 1. The key is a record: more than 1.4 million people bought a ticket, making June 30 the best start for the event in 20 years.
A fantastic start that also marks an increase of almost 53% compared to the first day last year. Which had attracted “only” 900,000 people to the theaters. And a guarantee that this Sunday, although marked by dense political and sporting news, was not like the others, it also marks the best day in terms of cinema attendance, all periods combined, since 2019.
The Fête du cinéma has existed since 1985. Over the years, it has often changed format, lasting one day, then three, then seven. Since 2012, the duration has been set at 4 days. This year, it takes place between Sunday, June 30 and Wednesday, July 3 inclusive.
Movies to see at the cinema
Among the films that are a hit The Count of Monte Cristoby Matthieu Delaporte and Alexandre De La Patellière adapted from the work of Alexandre Dumas. The film with Pierre Niney in the lead role was released on Friday June 28th specially.
Another feature film that attracted viewers: the new Pixar Vice-versa 2The public also went to see Artus’ comedy A little something extra which has exceeded 8 million admissions since its release, as well as the horror film Without a sound: day 1.
It remains to be seen whether the trend of this edition of the Fête du cinéma will continue until the end. As Boxofficepro points out, since the Fête du cinéma has lasted four days, the “record” has been 3.5 million admissions. It was set in 2013, and repeated in 2021, after a year 2020 marked by Covid and the closure of theaters.
