the essential
A mecca of history, aviation and aquatic leisure, Muretain offers pleasures and thrills on the outskirts of Toulouse.

Muret is the heir to a rich and eclectic architectural heritage. You will travel through the centuries as you explore the charming historic center, with its cobbled streets lined with half-timbered houses, ramparts and the beautiful Romanesque church of Saint-Jacques.

The first settlement dates back to the Neolithic period, but it was in the 11th century, at the confluence of the Louge and the Garonne, that the citadel at “Murel” was built (protected by walls).

A castle and the church of Saint-Sernin were then built, replaced in the 12th century by the church of Saint-Jacques.

Aviation was born in Muret with Clément Ader, inventor of the first flying machine, the wind turbine. The aviator gave his name to a park where The Flight of Icarus, a statue of Paul Landowski, author of Christ the Redeemer of Rio de Janeiro, sits!

Clément Ader also has the honor of a museum where he takes you on his adventure in the company of other great men of the city, Adolphe Niel, Marshal of France, and Vincent Auriol, President of the Fourth Republic.

The Muretain Tourist Office offers guided tours of the historic heart of Muret, the pretty village of Lavernose-Lacasse and the fortified town of Saint-Lys all summer long.

Muret comes alive on “Summer Fridays” in Place de la République with a gourmet market and concerts.

You can get some fresh air in the Confluence Garonne-Ariège nature reserve. A beautiful setting for the Château des Confluences, an 18th century building restored by the municipality of Pinsaguel. It cannot be visited, but its park welcomes Les Terrasses du Château in a tavern atmosphere, every Thursday evening in the summer in July and August.
