Miley Cyrus denies accusations of plagiarism from Bruno Mars’ hit and calls for dismissal of ‘Flowers’ copyright infringement lawsuit.
Miley Cyrus has responded to recent accusations surrounding her hit “Flowers.” As EW recalls, a holder of part of the copyright to “When I Was Your Man” by Bruno Mars accuses the singer of having copied it for her Grammy-winning hit “Flowers”.
Miley Cyrus’ lawyers on Wednesday denied allegations of copyright infringement brought by Tempo Music Investments and pointed to the fact that Tempo, holding only part of the copyright to “When I Was Your Man ” (which he acquired by purchasing the catalog of the song’s co-writer, Philip Lawrence), “does not have standing to sue for copyright infringement.”
Tempo’s complaint states that “it is undeniable, given the combination and number of similarities between the two recordings, that ‘Flowers’ would not exist without ‘When I Was Your Man,'” noting that there is “reproduced many melodic, harmonic and lyrical elements” of the Bruno Mars song released in 2013.
