With “Karaoke Moon”, Warhaus listens to his subconscious

There are magnetic voices, which touch you whatever the projects. Having become famous with his group Balthazar, the Belgian singer and musician Marteen Devoldere has been running his boat solo for almost 10 years, also under the name Warhaus. And this Friday he is releasing his fourth album under this avatar, “Karaoke Moon”, marked by letting go, Magritte-style surrealism and the study of his subconscious.

There is one constant with Marteen Devoldere, whether with his group Balthazar or solo: it is difficult not to succumb to the timbre of his voice. But that’s not enough. With Warhaus, the singer-songwriter opens up more. After a heartbreak two years ago, he is back with a record with another ambition: to explore the recesses of his subconscious.

“I felt the urge to dance with some of my demons, to delve into dark parts of my subconscious, while having fun.”

But humor, in this romantic Fleming, is always in the corner of rhyme. He doesn’t take himself seriously, even makes fun of his status as a singer and rock star at times and on this new project developed over many months in an attic in Bruges, he wrote a lot and started again. Because it implied a lot of itself: “I wrote down all my dreams for a year, took a lot of psychedelics and did hypnosis sessions. And when he hypnotized me for the first time, I was intrigued by his intonation , a very different way of speaking, very musical – he doesn’t speak but doesn’t sing either – and I took that back, to find a way of singing between the two.”. And whatever its flow, it always impresses.

Also, we guess by listening to him speak, he is never really at rest, between creation and gigantic tours. “I can’t stop writinghe confesses. Even then I started new songs“.

“It’s like I want to protect myself: if the new disc doesn’t work, I have others on hand. Like protection against injuries, I don’t know.”

Narcissistic injuries common in this industry, even if this very elegant new album deserves none.
