On social networks, the organizers of the Bamako Ciné sans frontières Festival seem delighted with the reception given by the public, “It’s just goodbye! We look forward to seeing you for an even richer and more inspiring next edition (…) to bring old projection rooms back to life. Together, let’s rehabilitate these spaces to create unforgettable memories and share films.»
According to the director of the festival, Hachim Mohamed Sacko, the idea of merging these two festivals came to him with the closure of borders due to Covid-19 in 2020. It was difficult for people to travel during this period because of the health restrictions and many people passed the time by watching films.
According to him, through cinema, “we have the impression of traveling, hence the idea of the Film Festival without Borders.” The theme chosen for this first edition is “Protection of humans».
A selection of five films, only short films, was on the program for this 1st edition. Ivorian, Beninese, Congolese and Malian films which are screened and which raise awareness of education, human rights and violence against women.
The director of the French Institute of Bamako, Flore M’Bonog, appreciates the organization of this festival and believes that through the word “without borders», the festival will not be limited to Bamako, but will take film buffs across the regions. She remains hopeful that cinema will revive in Bamako and throughout Mali, because “cinema is the art where everything happens.»
