Pianist prodigy, singer with a thousand facets and little genius of musical tinkering, Mathis Akengin takes us on a journey into his soft and flowery indie pop universe. The Franc-Comtois does not forget his Turkish origins which greatly influence his compositions, and today gives us two superb pieces including one completely new for this #studio3 session.

Mathis Akengin, you already know him. Keyboard of the groups Dead Chic, Mystically, recently Alexandrie and previously Eméa, Neptune Quartet or Catfish, who have already passed through #studio3, it is today as a solo artist that he begins a new adventure. A strong need for emancipation to offer the public the ideas, melodies and texts that have been running through their heads for all these years.

Arriving on set with as much equipment as a quintet, he single-handedly manages modern or vintage machines, keyboards, pedals, effects, which transport us body and soul into the musicality of his songs.

I always have a lot of respect for artists who use real instruments and who “tweak” them to create harmony and rhythm. So this “DIY” side is really something that speaks to me a lot!

We knew his talent for the piano, which he has been practicing since he was 5 years old, but this deep voice, which transmits emotions with disconcerting ease, is a nugget that we are discovering with delight. His childhood idol is Nina Simone, a piano, a voice, raw emotions: so here we are. Today, he is inspired by Patrick Watson, Agnès Obel, Jeanne Added… for whom he opened on July 13 during the summer concerts at the Citadel of Besançon. A great first scene for a solo project!

Between tours, concerts and rehearsals with his different groups, it was complicated for Mathis to dare to get started, then to find the time and mental space to develop his own universe. The bet was won since his first EP will be released in 2025.

In this EP we will of course find “Passage des Fleurs”, this first opus that Mathis revealed on his networks a few months ago and which he covers here especially for us. This song, which mixes English and Turkish, is a letter to his grandfather. They don’t speak the same language, but through this song, they show us that tenderness, the bonds between two people who love each other do not necessarily come through words.

In this #studio3 session, Mathis exclusively offers us a new piece, “Mer d’Hiver”, always in the softness and melancholy that characterizes his universe. It is the story of an elderly person, who feels the end of his life near and who addresses the sea asking it if he saw the storm pass, like an image of time passing, of the approaching storm…

No storm in sight for the rest of the events concerning Mathis, except that of success, which we obviously wish him. Find Mathis Akengin on his networks to follow all his news, and enjoy his #studio3 session full of emotions without delay.
