Princess Yuriko died on November 15, 2024 at the age of 101. Emperor Hirohito’s sister-in-law, who is the grandfather of the current ruler, was the eldest person in the imperial family. She had been hospitalized at St Luke’s International Hospital in Tokyo since March 3 due to aspiration pneumonia and a mild stroke.

Yuriko is the second daughter of Viscount Takagi Masanori. In 1941, at the age of 18, she married Takahito of Mikasa, nicknamed “the bearded prince”, who was the youngest brother of Emperor Hirohito. They will have three sons and two daughters.

Yuriko was the president of the Imperial Boshiaiiku-kai Foundation, which works for the welfare of mothers and children, and also honorary president of the Association for the Promotion of Traditional Japanese Clothing. After the war, she assisted her archaeologist and orientalist husband in his field research and document collection for many years.
