An American streamer has been indicted for “causing a scandal” in a convenience store in South Korea, South Korean prosecutors announced Tuesday.

“He was indicted on Monday without being detained for causing a scandal in a convenience store in October,” the spokesperson for the Seoul Southern District Prosecutors’ Office told AFP.

Ban on leaving Korean territory

Ismael Ramsey Khalid, 24, who goes by the name “Johnny Somali” online, can no longer leave South Korea because of a travel ban linked to the case, they said.

A convenience store employee in Seoul reported Johnny Somali to the police on October 17 after a clash when she asked him not to drink alcohol in the store.

The man is also accused of making sexist remarks to the saleswoman.

Johnny Somali made headlines in the country for a series of stunts, including performing a “twerk” near a statue commemorating Korean victims of sexual slavery by the Japanese military during World War II. .

The incident, which appeared in a video now removed from his YouTube channel, sparked strong reactions and condemnation.

He later apologized: “I want to apologize to the people of Korea. I was not aware of the significance of the statue… It was just entertainment for my audience,” a- he declared in an online video.

In one of his videos filmed in Japan, he could also be seen bothering train passengers by alluding to the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945.
