After a year and a half of work, the Museum of Modern and Contemporary of Saint-Étienne (MAMC) reopened its doors this Saturday, November 9.

After 19 months of work, the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Saint-Étienne reopened its doors this Saturday. The opportunity to discover the numerous renovations carried out on this building built in 1987, and which had remained unchanged until then. And to rediscover the museum’s impressive collection of 23,000 pieces, making it the second largest collection in behind the Pompidou Center in .

Launched in April 2023, the work aimed to “respond to contemporary challenges and offer a renewed visitor experience“.

This is a historic renovation since the museum has not undergone such an intervention since its creation in 1987.“, indicated Marc Chassaubéné, vice-president of Saint-Étienne Métropole in charge of culture at IF Saint-Étienne. An investment of nearly 5 million euros, part of which was financed by the State to the tune of 630,000 euros.

A rethought stroll

Beyond bringing the establishment up to standard, the entire visit route has been redesigned. The route is now “more intuitive for the visitor”, indicates Aurélie Voltz, director of the museum, at France 3. The lighting has been improved inside the rooms, as well as the air and ventilation installations, for better conservation of the works. The museum will also offer a “new, more inclusive mediation offer“, especially for children and families.

However, these works could not be the last. A project to extend the museum is planned.

On the occasion of its reopening, entry, performances, shows and visits will be free from November 9 to 11. Four exhibitions have already been announced at the museum: “Hors Format”, “Brand New!”, “David Meski” and “Anne Bourse”.
