A tribute is paid this Saturday, November 9, 2024 (at 7:30 p.m.) at Tropiques Atrium to the Malavoi orchestra, one of the island’s legendary groups. The band’s old repertoire is revisited by Georges Gromat alias Joko and some of his musician friends. The objective is to promote this musical heritage, particularly for the younger generation.

“L’autreMalavoi” is a project which is part of the promotion of heritage and awareness of the musical richness of the territory, for the transmission of this heritage to younger generations.

Through this show, Joko and his musicians go back in time (between 1964 and 1972) focusing on composers like Raphael Rimbaud (Singer of El Tipico, Ryco Jazz, Perfecta, Malavoi) or even Dédé Saint-Prix ( Maxy Twenty, Malavoi, Pakatak, Avan-van).

For us, it’s about reviving hits like “Sa maléré”, “Si la vie-a pa ka maché pousé-y”, “Sé pli yo kontan”, with authentic arrangements anchored in Martinican tradition. “L’autreMalavoi” is a heritage celebration combining tradition and modernity. We have nothing to envy of others, like Fania All Stars. These are hits with violins, trombones and saxophones, original rhythms that we should travel and know.

Joko – Show designer

Three friends (Mano Césaire, Christian De Négri, Jean-Paul Soïme), created in 1967 a solid synergy with a large part of the musicians of the Merry Lads orchestra.

Thus Malavoi was born, the name of a cane, but also of a Senegalese street. The first group has as pianist, Alain Jean-Marie, first cousin of Mano Césaire.

The group recorded its first album “Aux ondes Célini” in Guadeloupe, then picked up José Lagier and Paulo Rosine. The latter and Mano Césaire knew each other, having evolved together with “Conjunto Moderno” by Paulo-Roger Jaffory.

The rest we know, there were several periods of the Malavoi group with strings, then blowers and a return to the original. The Malavoi institution continues to regularly integrate young musicians and pass on a wealth of knowledge to them.

The group Malavoi during the 51st anniversary, 4 years ago (only missing Ralph Thamar, the emblematic singer of the group).

The tribute paid by Joko and the music “demonstrates our musical wealth and the immense heritage bequeathed by our elders”.
