He was an important figure in the Alpes-Maritimes. The artist Jacques Renoir died at the age of 82 on Thursday November 7, BFM Nice Côte d’Azur learned. Photographer, director but also cameraman, he was the descendant of a long line of artists.
As his last name suggests, he was the great-grandson of the famous painter Auguste Renoir but also the grandson of the actor Pierre Renoir, son of the director of photography Claude Renoir and nephew of the director Jean Renoir.
Aboard La Calypso with Jacques-Yves Coustea
An artist himself, he collaborated as a cameraman notably with Roger Vadim, Édouard Molinaro and Claude Sautet. Then, as Franceinfo recalls, he worked for seven years producing episodes of The Underwater Odyssey, aboard the ship La Calypso with Jacques-Yves Cousteau.
“Jacques Renoir, great-grandson of the famous painter Auguste Renoir, has left us. A talented photographer from Nice, he made history with his photos, notably during the epic Calypso alongside Commander Cousteau”, reacted this Thursday Anthony Borré, first deputy mayor of Nice on X.
His last exhibition took place at the Grimaldi castle-museum in Cagnes-sur-Mer, until June 16. With “Beyond the Look”, he offered more than 200 black and white photos: portraits, landscapes, studio views and moments of life frozen for eternity.
