Prince William arrived in South Africa on Monday for a four-day visit, during which he will attend an environmental innovation summit as part of his annual Earthshot Prize initiative, and meet President Cyril Ramaphosa.

For his first visit to South Africa since 2010, Prince William is due to meet Ramaphosa on Tuesday at Genadendal, the president’s official residence in Cape Town, on the sidelines of his participation in meetings on the environment.

« The President and Prince William will discuss a number of key issues of mutual interest. This visit is indicative of the strong ties that the United Kingdom, including the Royal Family, shares with South Africa, and is also another step towards deepening these historic ties », declared Monday evening
the presidential spokesperson, Vincent Magwenya, in a press release.

On Wednesday, the prince will take part in the Earthshot Awards ceremony, which rewards five winners with funds to support projects combating climate change and promoting environmental sustainability.

Launched in 2020, the Earthshot Prize was inspired by Prince William’s visit to Namibia and is named after former US President John F. Kennedy’s “moonshot” initiative, which aimed at lunar exploration.

« By the end of the week, I want the Earthshot Prize to have provided a platform for all those innovators who are bringing change to their communities, encouraged potential investors to accelerate the implementation of African solutions at scale, and inspired young people from across Africa engaging in climate issues “, Prince William said in a statement before his arrival.

The Earthshot Prize is particularly important because it draws attention to the pressing environmental challenges facing the African continent.
