“Shame on these rich people.” In a text published by La Tribune Dimanche, filmmaker and producer Luc Besson declares himself in favor of paying more taxes “to deal with the crisis in public finances” and restore the balance between “the richest and the most deprived”.

“The Prime Minister proposed to temporarily overtax the rich, that is to say the tax households of the French, earning more than 500,000 euros per year. I fall into this category and I am completely in favor of this measure. I even find it indecent to oppose it,” he says, deploring a “wealth gap” which “has continued to increase since the beginning of the 2000s.”

During his general policy speech, Michel Barnier announced that the “most fortunate French people” will be put to greater use within the framework of the 2025 budget to straighten out the country's accounts. A surtax on high incomes also made permanent and expanded by the deputies, as part of the debates on the finance bill, against the advice of the government.

For Luc Besson, who experienced years of turmoil where he had to face the financial problems of his company Europacorp and accusations of rape and sexual assault, dismissed by the Court of Cassation which pronounced a definitive dismissal of the case last June, “almost all the ills of our society come from this imbalance” and “to deny this observation is to deny reality”.

“So yes, I agree to pay more taxes, even a little more if necessary, and shame on these rich people, most often heirs, who cling to their nest egg like a mussel to a rock,” says -he.

On the other hand, he expects concrete actions, in exchange for this surcharge, so that the public authorities really take care of the most deprived. “It is the State which distributes wealth. Not the rich. The runoff is an illusion; redistribution an obligation”.
