Since October 30, “Anora” by Sean Baker has been visible in our theaters after its triumph at in May. But do you know which is the highest rated Palme d’Or of the 21st century on AlloCiné? Hint: it comes to us from South Korea.

Thirteen years after Terrence Malick and The Tree Life, the Palme d’Or was awarded to an American: Sean Baker, who capsized the Croisette thanks to Anora. If his first film released in was Tangerine, in 2015, it was especially with The Florida Project that he stood out, two years later, before taking his first steps in the Cannes competition in 2021.

That year, Red Rocket left empty-handed, but it was only a postponement before the director won the prize with Anora. Released on October 30 in theaters, the feature film directed by Mikey Madison has everything to please the general public, and to rank among the highest rated Palmes d’Or of the 21st century on AlloCiné. But it is in Korea that the leader of the ranking is still located.

Without much surprise, given how unanimously the film seems to be, it is Parasite which dominates the debates with its average of 4.5 out of 5 obtained from 29,662 ratings. The last Palme d’Or of the world before, the feature film which put South Korea on the list is ahead of The Pianist (4.4), a duo composed of Me, Daniel Blake and A Family Affair (4.2) then Anatomy of a fall (4.1).

Like Parasite, the latter made its way to the Oscars a few months later. But where Justine Triet walked away with the trophy for Best Original Screenplay, Bong Joon-ho hit harder and defied the odds by winning the Best Film and Best Direction awards, confirming his status as a phenomenon.

Some excerpts from reviews from Internet users who gave “Parasite” 5 out of 5

Anatole C : “Parasite is a masterpiece of filmmaking. The film is full of magnificent symmetrical shots and the photography is impeccable. The immensity of the house where most of the situations take place is very well highlighted and the different shots give a real soul to this home. Certain passages use slow motion and this enhances the image. We will also remember the part in the pouring rain at the end which is a gem of production.

Alice025 : “Bong Joon-Ho depicts two families who each have their qualities and their faults, it is not simply black and white. And it is in part thanks to this certain realism and their love towards their respective families that this film “Parasite is absolutely surprising, funny and heartbreaking at the same time, it definitely deserves to be seen again and again. A superb piece of cinematography.”

Jean-Marc P : “What elevates Parasite to the rank of masterpiece is the apparent ease with which Bon Joon-ho’s film transports us from a thriller with the trappings of a horror film or comedy to another much darker of social satire Its levels of reading are superimposed in a virtuosity of staging and a rhythm turns it upside down, a journey as dense and diverse of emotions that it brings us back to the very essence of cinema. he is held high with this Palme d’Or!”

Parasite is a masterpiece of filmmaking
Luke S. : “Very mysterious film, but that’s good! We go through a multitude of unexpected emotions. The actors are perfect, nothing to complain about the script. Bong Joon-ho once again demonstrates his talent to us with Parasite which has also received the Palme d’Or.”

pfloyd1 : “I love Korean films, jewels of cinema with often very careful production. Parasite is a gem, this film tells the story of a poor family, not really distinguished, living in the slums of the city, who struggling to get out of the financial woes of unemployment…until the son is recommended by a friend to give English lessons to a rich family. Hence the twist and ingenuity of the story. takes place, it’s about enjoying this new rich life and bringing the whole family into it. Distressing scenes, sometimes funny or dramatic, it’s a clever mix of emotions that these very good actors give us. live, a very good film with impeccable production.”

Isabelle EC : “Excellent, deep, funny and disturbing. A bit like Korean New Savages. A film that makes you ‘laugh with’ and not ‘laugh at’, which brings about social and societal reflection, in South Korea in which one can very project well. All the actors are credible, human, it’s a scam film, it’s sometimes grand puppet, it’s also tragic.

Parasite is a powerful, exciting fable, gripping the guts in a universal way, and an immense film from a filmmaker who nevertheless had nothing left to prove
Naughty Doc : “Between the genre thriller and the furious comedy, a libertarian manifesto and a heartbreaking signal of social distress, Parasite is a powerful, exciting fable, gripping the guts in a universal way, and an immense film from a filmmaker who nevertheless had nothing left to prove.”

Effy Stone: “What a film!!! Unique in its kind, I have never seen one like it. Seeing this film is a real experience, especially since I had only seen the BA once so I had everything to discover We go crescendo from an almost-comedy to a thriller The actors are incredible, big crush on the young woman who plays the daughter of the family (Ki-jung). is assembled piece by piece to ultimately have this rendering of immense sadness where every detail counts to fully appreciate the scope of this masterpiece.”

And you then? Did Parasite captivate you?
