Bérénice Bejo is the main actress of the film Under the Seine of Netflix. On this occasion, the Sunday Tribune asked him about the conditions filming.
The actress takes time before accepting each of her roles:
“Each project is a investment of his personI therefore do not commit myself lightly. I think that every choice is political. Everything I do tell something of me. This is my way of taking position.”
she says.
Anne Hidalgo's proposal
The actress agreed to play in this film for several reasons: “Even when I do Sous la Seine with this shark in Paris, it's a real spectator's choice: cinema is also entertainmentand there is a real subject
ecological in this film.” explains Bérénice Bejo. “It’s the French film most viewed of all time on Netflix and the second in a non-English language.”
And Anne Hidalgo, the mayor of Paris, made a funny request to the actress: “It gave me
special requests : Anne Hidalgo suggested that I jump with her in the Seine. I have
declined. She also asked me if it had been used as model for the character of the mayor. In fact, it's more of a mix of her and Valérie Pécresse.”
Did Bérénice Bejo swim in the Seine?
Did Bérénice Bejo bathed in the Seine during the filming of Under the Seine ? “No! But I still had two months of physical preparation, because I do all my stunts underwater.” she mentions. “I had to learn to dive, but not in the Seine.“She had already confided to Leisure TV having done his own waterfalls : “I trained myself to do a lot of
diving and apnea, with or without mask. I had to get back into physically fit because, even without talking about diving, there are plenty of scenes in the water to swim to kill sharks with my own hands (she laughs). I absolutely wanted to do my unlined stunts. […] I also had to learn all the security gestures because it's important to have them integrated to play freely, without worrying about security.”
And she does not regret not having been to the Seine.
“Frankly, my colleagues have been there: there is still
bikes, toilets, big fish,…and lots of current.” she worries while filming of a second part is underway. “In September 2025, we will turn Under the Seine 2. It won't be a simple sequel. This is another movie,
very different…but always with a shark.”
