The Outlast series has made a big splash in the field of video game horror: it will perhaps also make a splash in the Seventh side since we have just learned of a cinematographic adaptation. First detail.

Outlast of Us

It’s now been eleven years since the Outlast series made its way onto PC and consoles. In 2013, the first part caused a lot of ink and damaged a few vocal cords with a concept that was ultimately quite simple, based on pure escape and infiltration: here, no way to confront the enemies, since the only accessory we had at our disposal was a camera (we played a journalist, responsible for investigating the strange activities of a psychiatric asylum) and a certain agility allowing us to sneak and to hide in corners. Above all, the title focused everything on the sometimes omnipresent absence of light, forcing us to use the night vision of our camcorder to see something… while having to manage its autonomy.

At the time, Outlast, the first of its name, quickly established itself as a major and popular success, particularly on YouTube where he has built a solid reputation. Same story for Outlast 2 in 2017, which perhaps pushed the horror even further by taking us into an ultra-sordid village, dominated by a bloody and ruthless sect. Finally, let us also mention The Outlast Trials, a title published in 2023 on PC before arriving the following year on home consoles, this time focusing on cooperation. In total, there are more than 37 million players worldwide.

A film by the producer of It

Faced with such success, there were still a few ropes to pull to spread the brand beyond the small screen. It is the Bloody Disgusting site which reveals the information: the Red Barrels studio behind the saga is therefore joining forces with the Lionsgate studio (SAW) for a film adaptation. Better yet, we already have a first producer to get our teeth into, namely Roy Leethe man behind the production of numerous feature films: It, Doctor Sleep, Blair Witch and many others. He is also featured as a producer on the upcoming films Minecraft, BioShock and Until Dawn. He also speaks on Bloody Disguting:

When Outlast released in 2012, it changed the horror gaming landscape, setting a new standard for immersion in the genre. Its deep, emerging story provided a perfect foundation for creating a film that explores the psychological and physical horrors at the heart of the franchise. I’m excited to bring this unique world to life for new viewers and dedicated fans of the series.

As die-hard fans of horror in all its forms, we at Red Barrels are huge admirers of the work of Roy Lee and Lionsgate. Horror films old and new have had an undeniable impact on our franchise over the years, and now having the opportunity to work on an Outlast film with true horror legends is a dream, or should it be. I say, a nightmare come true.

It's one of the most terrifying video games of recent years: it's going to be adapted for the cinema!

For information, JT Petty is simply the screenwriter of the Outlast saga (he also worked as such on games like the first Splinter Cell and even season 2 of The Walking Dead by Telltale). His direct involvement in the scenario of the film Outlast therefore proves rather reassuring. “Red Barrels has been pushing the boundaries of horror in games for over a decade, and expanding the Outlast universe to cinema is an incredible opportunity to dive deeper into the characters and killers we love”he declares.

No release window is advanced at this time.
