Titanic review | Women and drag first!

Titanicthe hilarious musical show starring Véronique Claveau in the role of Céline Dion, is pure entertainment carried by a Broadway-caliber cast. A must-see for fans of our national Céline, sensitive to humor. camp ».

Yes, yes Titanic deceived everyone by sinking into the icy waters of the Atlantic more than a century ago, Céline Dion remains unsinkable to this day! The authors of Titanic therefore had flair by taking inspiration from the diva of Charlemagne and the film Titanic, by James Cameron, to create a musical. Because popular culture, like the imagination, is nourished by powerful symbols.

The Segal Center is offering a brilliant Canadian production (entirely in English) of this very comedic off-Broadway show, which could well become cult. With a story that juxtaposes the characters of Titanic to Céline Dion’s repertoire by ridiculing them, in a production where exaggeration, irony and provocation are essential ingredients.

Titanic begins when the performer of I’m Alive arrives unexpectedly at the Memorial Museum of Titanic. To divert a guided tour and tell, in your own way, the famous shipwreck. With songs from his repertoire, such as Taking Chances, All By Myself, River Deep, Mountain High, Beauty and The Beast… And of course, My Heart Will Go On.

The singer, played by Véronique Claveau, makes some anachronisms and reinterprets the maritime tragedy. For example, passengers on Titanic text each other. Rose sings a duet Tell Him, a vibrator in her hand… The “heart of the ocean”, this blue diamond given to her by her rich fiancé, is in giant size and bought… at Costco.

The cruise is having fun (crazy)

There are no children on board Titanicbut a few drag queens. We wink at reality RuPaul Drag Race. Rose’s suitors, Jack and Cal face off in a lip-sync battle « for your lifeeee… “. We even see the character of Iceberg (!) on stage, played by a legendary singer with a strong presence, in a fantastic number delivered by Christopher Ning.

You will have understood that we are in parody mode. Humor is often camp » et « gay friendly » throughout the 100-minute show (without intermission).

American director Tye Blue can count on a solid cast of 14 Canadian performers who know how to play, dance and sing well (the famous “ triple threat ») ; including the formidable Véronique Claveau. The actress and singer is perfect in her interpretation of Céline. She skillfully mixes homage and parody. Let’s also mention Constant Bernard in the role of Ruth, Rose’s bad mother. The performance of this Franco-Ontarian actor is irresistible; a queer crossover of Joan Crawford and Gloria Swanson, revised and corrected by John Waters!

Titanic is still playing in New York. The musical is also produced in Sydney, Australia and soon in London. After the Montreal performances, this Segal and Mirvish co-production will move to Toronto, starting December 5. We highly recommend this antidote to the November blues.
